Galápagos hybrid iguana

The Galápagos hybrid iguana is a rare cross between a male marine iguana and a female land iguana. It is documented on South Plaza Island, where the two species’ ranges overlap, and individuals are a hybrid rather than a separate species, typically sterile. Hybrids show a mix of traits, including the land iguana’s build with the marine iguana’s darker coloring and climbing ability. Sightings are occasional along the South Plaza trail.
