Woodpecker finch

The woodpecker finch is a Darwin’s finch famous for using tools, holding a cactus spine or twig to pry insect larvae from bark. It is one of the few birds in the world that regularly uses tools in the wild. Endemic to the Galápagos, it lives mainly in humid highland and transition forest. It fills an ecological role similar to woodpeckers, which are absent from the islands.
