The Floreana mockingbird is one of the rarest birds in the Galápagos, surviving only on the small satellite islets of Champion and Gardner near Floreana. It went extinct on Floreana itself in the late 1800s after settlers introduced cats, rats, and grazers. The species inspired part of Charles Darwin’s thinking on how island populations diverge. A reintroduction to Floreana is a long-running conservation goal.

Resident year-round; the total population is very small and fluctuates with rainfall.
